Doing Your Soul’s Work in Right Relationship

Imagine a world where the work everyone does is their unique form of creative expression inspired from a soul level. Now imagine that everyone can do this in full acceptance and with life-sustaining appreciation of what their creative expression contributes to this world. This is a reality of a new socioeconomic paradigm that every creative, innovator and entrepreneur can be part of making simply by opening to and learning new ways of being in relationship with other creatives, innovators and entrepreneurs.

When Kyma Professional Corporation (KPC) set up shop to serve creatives, innovators and entrepreneurs, one of the goals was to demystify and make working with intellectual property (IP) more accessible. Over the years, my clients (my creative heroes) have been telling me that if they have and are using IP, they don’t know it. Becoming more aware of their IP would make them more resourceful with their businesses and help them avoid getting into the kind of jeopardy that cuts businesses off at the knees.

Less than a year after KPC opened its doors, I was at a Women’s Business Network (WBN) event hosted by my friend and graphic designer, Loreto Cheyne (Lola Design). She challenged me to sum up in a word or two what my brand was about. Telling people I was a lawyer helping my clients protect their IP was not going to cut it, and frankly, did not align with the part of my work that seemed to have the greatest impact for my clients.

Under the WBN event spotlight, without warning and without thinking, the words that came out were “Creative Empowerment”. In that moment, the real reason entrepreneurs might seek to understand and work with IP was made plain. It was because they feel creatively disempowered by legal challenges and business relationships that go south. This is about more than diverting precious resources to solve ‘big’ problems. It is about feeling like the lifeblood of the business, the creative force that sustains it, has been cut off. As a result, designing legal solutions for my creative heroes to confidently steward the inspired creations at the heart of their businesses has been the focus of KPC’s services for more than a decade.

There can be no creative empowerment without promoting a culture and ecosystem that serves creative freedom and appreciation in all strata of socioeconomic activity. This is an aspect of access to justice and practicing justice as an act of loving commitment to foster abundance for all including our big blue planet Earth. Creative freedom and appreciation must permeate all of our relations to be collectively sustaining. The tension that exists in IP law is that sometimes it works to do this and too often it does not. Yet, even if you choose not to leverage IP in your business, you will still engage in the relational dynamics of valuing creative contributions and creative stewardship as part of your business. KPC’s role has shifted to increasingly focus on services that illuminate the relational insights embedded in IP legal frameworks and that foster more collectively beneficial, co-creative collaborations.
